Survey
We conduct an ongoing survey on the status of product management and product marketing in the Telecoms, IT and Software industries. If you’d like to take part, please email us by clicking here. In return we’ll give you a personal comparison showing how your background, role, salary and day-to-day activities compare to the industry norm.
In Jan 2012, 216 people took the survey from 154 companies. The key themes to emerge were :-
• finding time for strategic work without being distracted by fire-fighting
• often product management is a catch-all for issues (absolving other departments of responsibility)
• product managers complain that their businesses are overly focused on short-term revenue and individual customers rather than taking a wider and longer-term view of market opportunities
• many product managers felt that a consistent and well communicated strategy was missing from above
• lack of clarity on roles and responsibilities in the product area – often resulting in product management not being properly understood or valued by the rest of the business

Remember the survey results are the industry norm not best practice. You can read-up on best practice here at our blog, by subscribing to our journal or attending one of our training courses.
